NHL Notes: Doughty won't be charged

Despite losing Jaromir Jagr, James van Riemsdyk and Matt Carle, are the Flyers better now than they were when their postseason run ended in May? Sarah Baicker says no, but takes a closer look at the Flyers' off-season moves (see story).

Though the Flyers' summer has been relatively calm, at least compared to last year, there are still a lot of big names left for the taking, including Shane Doan, a free agent, and Rick Nash, the subject of many a trade rumor (see story).

While teams are busy preparing for next year, it has yet to be determined if there will be an NHL season with a work stoppage possible. If there is a lockout, Ilya Bryzgalov knows where he’ll be — playing in the KHL (see story).

Here’s a look at what else is going on around the league:

No charges for Kings’ star
Though a woman recently accused Los Angeles Kings' defenseman Drew Doughty of sexual assault, the 22-year-old will not be charged because of a lack of sufficient evidence (see full story).

The woman accusing Doughty of date-rape told the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office that she had had consensual sex with Doughty before.

Of the rape accusation, the woman claimed she was drinking with him at a Hermosa Beach bar before going back to his home where the alleged assault occurred.

“Drew has consistently maintained that the allegations were baseless and unwarranted,” Craig Renetsky, Doughty’s attorney, said. "Charges were never warranted in this case.”

Boston won’t bid for Nash, Ryan
According to ESPN Boston’s Jimmy Murphy (via ProHockeyTalk), the Bruins will not participate in the bidding to land Rick Nash or Bobby Ryan.

“An NHL source indicated to me today as of now the Bruins are not in on Ryan and Nash sweepstakes and [David] Krejci and [Milan] Lucic are not available,” Murphy reported via Twitter.

Allegedly, Boston will not part with Krejci, a 26-year-old forward who recorded 62 points last year, or Milan Lucic, a 24-year-old who totaled 61 points.

Nash, who has racked up 547 points in 674 career games in nine career seasons with Columbus, has supposedly listed Boston along with Detroit, Pittsburgh, San Jose, the Flyers and the Rangers as destinations to which he would approve a trade.

B's add on 'D'
The Bruins secured another blue liner on Wednesday, signing defenseman Aaron Johnson to a one-year deal which could vest as much as $650,000, CSNNE.com reports.

Johnson totaled a career-high 16 points in 56 games last season for the Blue Jackets. The 29-year-old defenseman has played parts of seven NHL seasons for the Jackets, Islanders, Blackhawks, Oilers and Flames.

Johnson won’t be a shoo-in to make the big club — he’ll have to battle for a spot — and if he ends up spending the whole season in Providence of the AHL, the contract will be worth just $105,000.
