The Phillies announced Thursday that third baseman Placido Polanco has been placed on the 15-day disabled list -- retroactive to July 23 -- with lower back inflammation.
Polanco has slumped off and on at the plate all season, but batted .293 May and posted a .361 on-base percentage in June. Those numbers, of course, took a sharp dive in July, when he hit just 6-for-45 (.143) in 14 games.
Ty Wigginton has been filling Polanco's spot at third since Monday, but has struggled mightily at the position so far this season.
The club will announce a corresponding move to temporarily replace Polanco on the roster on Friday.
