Flyers sign D Bourdon, draft pick Laughton
The Flyers on Wednesday re-signed restricted free agent defenseman Marc-Andre Bourdon to a two-year, $1.225 million extension, and signed 2012 first-round draft pick center Scott Laughton to an entry-level contract.
Bourdon, 22, was first called up from the AHL's Adirondack Phantoms last November when both Chris Pronger and Braydon Coburn were injured. He appeared in 46 games with the Flyers (only one in the postseason), having struggled with injury and a concussion.
Last week, general manager Paul Holmgren said Bourdon is "fine" physically, having completely healed from the concussion symptoms he experienced for a significant portion of last season. Despite the rather long wait, his re-signing was expected -- but takes on even more importance in the wake of Andrej Meszaros' possibly season-ending torn right Achilles tendon.
"I'm very excited about the deal!" Bourdon told CSNPhilly.com in a text message.
Bourdon (6-0/206) scored four goals and registered three assists with the Flyers last season, while averaging 16:11 ice time. He was frequently the defensive partner of Matt Carle, whom the Flyers lost to the Tampa Bay Lightning last month, and he very well could see more playing time this year -- especially given the lack of other physical-yet-mobile players on the blue line.
Laughton, 18, was the Flyers' first pick of the 2012 draft, selected 20th overall in the first round. A center for the Oshawa Generals of the OHL for the past two seasons, Laughton has scored 22 goals and added 43 assists in 127 games. He will likely return to Oshawa this season.
He turned a lot of heads during the Flyers' recent prospect camp in July, particularly that of director of player development Ian Laperriere, who said he "really like[d]" Laughton's scrappy, two-way game.
Entry-level contracts, like the one Laughton signed, are awarded to players under the age of 25. For players between the ages of 18 and 21 (as Laughton is), entry-level deals are standard at three years in length. His deal is worth $925,000 per year, with a potential for $212,500 in bonuses.E-mail Sarah Baicker at email@example.com
